Writer Erin Eckles:
This is my story, and I’ll swear by it. I come from a
long line of storytellers. At least four generations that I
can personally vouch for. All of them spinning a tale or weaving
a web some historians, some historical revisionists.
There exists, in my own little world, enough characters and
stories for me to write about for a lifetime. I only hope that
I have enough time and talent to tell all their tales.
I got the hell out of Dodge City , Kansas , and went to college
where I proceeded to spend too much time writing about my family.
I left the country. They followed me. I went back to college
and got a degree in English. I moved to one coast, then another,
all in an attempt to avoid the chorus of voices I couldn’t
escape coming to me from the Mid-west like Whoville floating
on a flower in the pink middle of nowhere. I hear dead people,
and I am related to them.
I have worked and lived and loved. I have built my own family.
And yet, it is my family of origin to whom I owe the depth and
richness in my life. They taught me how to tell a story -- to
frame a thought, an argument, an idea -- and to express it to
someone else.
I work. I write. I eat. I sleep. I change diapers. I scoop the
litter box. I cook for my partner and occasionally yell during
dinnertime. I try and keep up with friends, but mostly I just
keep my head above water. I hate commuting and have a tendency
toward road rage. I don't have many illusions left about life
or love, or Hollywood . Except someday, I really hope to become
Miss America .
